"Pagodes" is the first movement of “Estampes”, a three-part solo piano suite by French composer Claude Debussy (1862 –1918). This piece was inspired by melodies of the Gamelan traditional music of Indonesia, with which he was familiar. Debussy admired the art of his contemporary impressionist painters. Thus, many of his transparent and expressive compositions remind us of the subtle fluidity of the art of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, or other impressionist masters.
