Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) was not only an extraordinarily gifted Italian composer but also a devilishly skilled cook and a true gastronome — a celebrated foodie of his age, one might say. His vast catalogue even includes piano pieces inspired by the pleasures of the table, such as "Quatre mendiants" and "Quatre hors-d’œuvre". And of course, one of French cuisine’s greatest classics, the legendary Tournedos Rossini, was created in his honour.

A thoughtful gift from my kind neighbours’ harvest! I marinated the figs in semi-sweet white wine with a touch of grape syrup, infused with star anise, cinnamon sticks, and a hint of pink pepper. The result is a fine, fragrant dessert — perfect after a rich meal, or as a luscious topping for yogurt, panna cotta, or any creamy finale. Delicate, aromatic, and delicious!
