The incidental music “Under the Apple Tree”, which combines in a brilliant way orchestral and operatic elements, was written by Josef Suk (1874-1935) for Julius Zeyer’s homonymous dramatic legend. Suk was a leading composer in Czech Modernism and a virtuoso violinist too. His talent was recognized by some of the most eminent music figures of his time, such as Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler, and Alban Berg.
