Maria Mourkoussi

Maria has been travelling the world of music and taste since her early twenties. Born to a family of professional make-up artists and food aficionados, she studied opera singing in Greece and took voice coaching masterclasses in France. She has appeared in major Greek venues (amongst others, Herod Atticus Odeon, Greek National Opera, Megaron the Athens Concert Hall) with acclaimed local ensembles (GNO Orchestra, Armonia Atenea etc). She has also performed in France and Egypt and has given concerts featuring classic musical repertoire and old popular French songs. A cherished moment in her singing path was the first recording of three songs written by contemporary Greek composer Argyris Kounadis on Richard Wagner’s poetry.

She is the author and narrator of “The Kitchen Enchanter”, a short story for children dedicated to passionate food and music workers, which was set to music by composer Diamantina Vrachlioti. The audio version of the story premiered in the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation-ERT in 2021.

She is a graduate of the University of Athens (French Literature and Civilisation Section) and holds a postgraduate degree in Translation from March Bloch University, Strasbourg, France. She is fluent in English, French, and Greek. She also speaks Italian. She sings in German, Spanish, Russian and Czech. As a translator, she has been involved in a wide range of projects, including dozens of books, surtitled or subtitled opera performances and more than one hundred dubbed cinema and TV productions.

She has worked for various arts and culture institutions as a writer and editor (Megaron, Hellenic Festival, Greek National Opera, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation-ERT etc.), and has held managerial positions in international sport events (2004 Olympic Games, 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, 2003 Paris World Athletics Championships).
